The archipelago consists of ten islands, situated 1,000 kilometers south-west of the Canarian Islands and only 480 kilometers west of Senegal. The islands have a total area of 4,033 km2 and they are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Santiago is the largest island and the smallest is Santa Luzia (uninhabited). The islands have volcanic origin and are divided into two groups: Borlavento (the northern islands: Santo Antao, Sao Vicente, Santa Luzia, Sao Nicolao, Sal, Boa Vista) and the Sotavento (the southern islands: Maio, Santiago, Fogo, Brava). Most of the islands are mountainous with spectacular rock formations and the island of Fogo hosts an active volcano.

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) showes that in 2012, the hotels in Cape Verde welcomed more than 534,000 people, an increase of 12.3%, tourists preferring the islands of Sal and Boa Vista, where you can find the most beautiful beaches of the archipelago.
